Monthly Meeting Recap and News for July 2025
Greetings guitar fans,Welcome to this month’s newsletter. Read below for a recap of our last meeting and upcoming guitar-related events. The Monthly MeetingThere were about 30 people in attendance last Thursday, with a small number of performers and no intermission, but with a lot of music and some magical moments. PROGRAM John Swinnerton – The Road Home, Baroque #1, Jazz Night (originals) Dan Mish – Summertime by George Gershwin and DuBose Heyward Norm Fletcher (former member visiting from California) – Frozen Fields by Jeff Black, Shiver me Timbers by Tom Waits, Tall Buildings by John Hartford Francesco Bard – The Muldrake Overture (original) Brian Parris – When I Call Your Name by Vince Gill, Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood by The Animals, Silver Lining by David Gray Grant Ruiz – Someone to Watch Over Me, Love is Here to Stay by George and Ira Gershwin (arr. Duarte/Ruiz) |
| AnnouncementsAt the next monthly meeting on August 14, the guitar society will host featured guitarist and composer Hiroya Tsukamoto, originally from Kyoto, Japan. He’s the first guitarist we’ve ever hosted who uses a looper (realtime recording and playback). You can check out some of his music here. As usual, local performers will play during the first half of the meeting, then Hiroya will play for us. His appearance is being made possible by a grant from TourWest/Creative West. On Thursday, July 24, Grant Ruiz will play solo guitar at Liquid Lounge in downtown Ashland from 6:00 to 8:00pm. On Sunday, July 27, he and Dan Fellman (Canto Sol) will play at Paschal Winery in Talent from 3:30 to 5:30pm. And on Sunday, August 10, Grant will play solo guitar at Belle Fiore Winery in Ashland from 5:30 to 7:30. Outreach CornerThe guitar society, with the aid of a grant from TourWest/Creative West, sponsored a one-hour appearance at the Jacksonville Community Center by the Folias Duo, who were a big hit on the afternoon of June 21. Guitars for saleFrom local jazz guitarist Ed Dunsavage: “Finally getting around to listing a couple of my guitars. Here’s the link for the Goodall baritone.
